Sea TurtlesFrom the teenage mutant ninja turtles, to pet turtles, to sea turtles, it is prevalent that turtles are quite popular among the reptile world. They are impressive creatures, if I don't say so myself. Many turtles are able to live in the confines of suburbia, as well as some of the largest cities in the Eastern US. Turtles are unique among the reptile world for many reasons. One being that they are one of the very few reptiles that do not provoke fear in humans! To most, alligators, crocodiles, and fierce monitor lizards are a living nightmare, yet there are few who are scared of the turtle. Many even feel that the turtle is an extremely peaceful creature, and watching them is a pleasure. There is a misconception that turtles are slow moving and awkward, when they are really quite graceful. Indeed, turtles can be quite majestic in their natural environment. This is especially true for the sea turtle, a beautiful and stunning creature, that few are able to see in action. Although, when the season is right, there are a few privileged individuals who are able to witness the eggs hatching on the beach, as the turtles quickly waddle their way to the ocean. Some are also able to witness the turtles depositing the eggs themselves, and they see that the sight and sounds of the nesting process are quite unforgettable. Sea turtles have more than earned their respect from humans. They are among the oldest surviving creatures in the world, and so in a way, they are what we may call “living fossils". More so, sea turtles are very distinct in their appearance. One especially, the loggerhead turtle, is capable of weighing over 1000 pounds! It is also the deepest diver and is capable of going as deep as 1300 feet. Yet sadly, sea turtles are becoming increasingly more endangered, and we cannot allow it to precipitate any further! As always, education is the first step to solving a problem. And so, here we embark on this adventurous odyssey that is the Sea Turtle. |
